Maybe You Don’t Need More Motivation

Sometimes what feels like lack of motivation is really lack of space.

A few years ago I found myself asking a question that I suspect many people ask, although we don't always say it out loud. If I can see so clearly that something isn't working anymore... why am I still here? Why wasn't anything changing? I knew something felt off. I could feel the discomfort. I could see possibilities I’d spent a long time ignoring. And yet, despite all of that awareness, nothing seemed to move.


For a while I assumed the answer was motivation.

Maybe I needed more discipline.

Maybe I needed to be braver.

More decisive.

More certain.

Maybe I simply needed to push harder.


And I think many of us do this. We take something deeply human and turn it into a personal failing. Sometimes what we call feeling stuck is trying to tell us something important.We assume that if we can see what needs to change, then surely we should be able to act.


And if we don't?


Something must be wrong with us.



Why Knowing Isn’t Always Enough


Over the years I've noticed something interesting.


People often arrive at career conversations believing they have a confidence problem.

Or a motivation problem.

Or a decision-making problem.


They'll say things like:


"I know something needs to change."

"I know this isn't right anymore."

"I know what I want, but I'm doing absolutely nothing about it."


And then, usually not far underneath that:


"I don't understand what's wrong with me."


I understand that question because I've asked versions of it myself. And for a long time I assumed that if I wasn't acting, then I probably needed to become better at something.


Better at coping.

More decisive.

More disciplined.

Better at pushing through.


But I've become less convinced that's always what's happening. Because when you slow things down and really look, another picture often begins to emerge.


People are exhausted.


They're carrying a lot.


They're responding to the next thing and then the next thing and then the next thing.


There is very little room left.


And I think we underestimate what that does to us. Because we often talk as though clarity naturally creates movement. As though once you can see something clearly, action should automatically follow. But real life rarely works like that. Sometimes life can hold more than one truth at the same time. Because none of us are making decisions in isolation. We're making decisions inside our actual lives. And sometimes the structure of those lives leaves very little space for anything new to emerge.


And all of that matters.


Because understanding something clearly is not the same thing as having the capacity to do something with what you know.



The Question Many People Quietly Ask Themselves


I hear versions of this all the time:


"I know what I want but I'm not doing anything about it."

"I know something needs to change."

"So why am I still here?"


And underneath those questions often sits another one:


"What's wrong with me?"


But sometimes that isn't the right question. Not because you don't have agency, or your choices don't matter. But because that question assumes you're operating in a vacuum. And you aren't. None of us are.



Clarity Is Not The Same As Capacity


There was a point in my own life where I thought I needed to become better at coping. Better at pushing through. Better at holding everything together. But eventually I realised something I hadn't wanted to see. I wasn't struggling because I lacked motivation.


I was exhausted.


There simply wasn't enough space. Not just time. Space.

The kind of space where you can think. Reflect. Notice yourself. Tolerate uncertainty.

Hear yourself clearly enough to know what you actually want. Without that, even the clearest insight can end up going nowhere.



The Structures We Live Inside Shape Us


The way your life is set up shapes more than you might realise.


It shapes energy.

Capacity.

Thinking.

Possibility.

It quietly shapes what feels available to you.


And this is why I think many career conversations unintentionally become too narrow. They focus on mindset. Confidence. Decision-making. All important. But they sometimes miss the conditions people are living inside.


Because your environment shapes your choices.


And the life you're living shapes what you feel able to sustain.



Maybe The Next Step Isn't The Big Step


Sometimes we assume the next step must be a major decision.


Leave.

Change careers.

Start over.

Do something dramatic.


But sometimes the next step is smaller than that.


Maybe it's protecting an hour.

Maybe it's resting.

Maybe it's reducing one thing that is draining you.

Maybe it's creating enough space for yourself to hear your own thoughts again.


Because sometimes movement doesn't begin with forcing a decision. Sometimes it begins by changing the conditions around it. Even slightly. And sometimes that's enough.
