How to Lead Yourself Through Transition

When the structures around you shift, how do you stay rooted in yourself?

For many professionals — especially those in public service and healthcare — change can feel deeply personal. It’s not just strategy or restructure. It’s about your role, your impact, and sometimes even your sense of self.
After a major change (like the recent NHS England news), many people are left wondering:
Who am I now that this version of my work is ending?
What do I hold onto — and what do I let go of?
This is where self-leadership becomes essential.
Because true leadership isn’t just how we show up for others.
It's how we choose to stay present, grounded, and honest with ourselves — even when everything else is shifting.
5 Ways to Lead Yourself Through Transition
1. Name What’s Ending.
Endings aren’t just professional — they’re emotional. Name what you’re grieving, not just what you’re changing.
2. Honour the In-Between.
William Bridges calls this the “neutral zone.”
It’s uncomfortable, yes — but it’s also where clarity emerges.
3. Don’t Rush the Reinvention.
Give yourself permission to readjust and explore what else is possible.
4. Connect With What’s Still True.
Your values. Your voice. Your why. These are your anchors, even when the external form shifts.
5. Seek Support That Feels Aligned.
Not all support is created equal. Find people or spaces that will support through this challenge and your evolution, not just organisational outcome.
A Final Thought
Leading others is important.
But leading yourself — especially through loss, transition, or awakening — is sacred work.
This is what I now support women in doing through Owning Being You™.
Because your identity isn’t just what you do.
It’s who you get to be when everything else is stripped away — and you finally come home to yourself.
