Redefining Success in Midlife: Why Chasing ‘Enough’ Finally Feels Right

I still remember the day it hit me.
I was sitting in an office — high floor, glass windows, the kind of space I’d once dreamed about.
My to-do list was endless.
My diary was full.
From the outside, my life looked… perfect.
Inside, I felt bereft.
I had worked so hard to “arrive", but somewhere along the way, I had lost myself. The version of success I had been chasing no longer fit.
I had reached my Midlife Success Crisis.
If this sounds familiar, you're in good company!
Many women reach their 40s and 50s having achieved what they once thought they wanted:
A stable or impressive career
A home, a family, a partner
A life that looks like success from the outside
only to realise it wasn't.
A quiet voice starts whispering:
“Is this it?”
This isn’t failure.
It's midlife realignment.
A study by Harvard Business Review found that over 50% of professionals in midlife reported declining career satisfaction, even in roles they once aspired to.
Because the truth is..... we evolve.
We grow.
We change.
Our values evolve.
What motivated us in our 20s and 30s — changes.
Titles, promotions, the next rung on the ladder, the things that were so all consuming at one point — stop feeling meaningful.
That version of success, Success 1.0, stops fitting!
What makes this so hard and confronting, is that by midlife we have often spent years chasing this version of success — the sunk cost in time, energy and often sacrifice — to then wake up one day to the realisation we are no longer fulfilled,
and have been chasing someone else’s version of success?
"Quelle horreur "😨
You've ticked
Society’s checklist
Industry expectations
Your family’s hopes
but somehow misplaced yourself.
This is why midlife is the time to redefine success ~ Success 2.0.
Success 2.0 isn't louder or shinier.
It’s quieter, lighter, and deeply aligned.
It feels like coming home to yourself, and to finally becoming you!
So if you’re feeling the quiet nudge to change, here’s where to start:
3 Steps to Redefine Success
1. Pause & Reflect
Step away from autopilot.
Ask yourself: Which parts of my life energise me? Which drain me?
2. Reconnect to What Matters
Revisit your values.
Not the ones you inherited — the ones that feel alive in your bones right now!
3. Redesign — Slowly and Deliberately
Take one small, brave step toward alignment.
It might be:
A boundary at work
Exploring a long-buried passion
Saying “no” to what no longer serves you
The Quiet Revolution of Midlife
Here’s what I’ve learned, and what I teach in Creating the Career You Want™ Programme:
Success at this stage isn’t about doing more.
It’s about a career — and life — that feel as good on the inside
as it sounds on the outside.
If this is resonating, maybe it’s your time too.
If you’re ready to start designing a career and life that finally feel like you, join me for Creating the Career You Want™.
Your next chapter can be your best one yet.
